Celebrities unite world to raise £20million for Haiti earthquake relief

It was the night the superstars of music and film joined together to bring a ray of hope to the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

More than 140 of the biggest names on the planet performed at George Clooney's Hope For Haiti telethon - raising £20million.

Dressed in black, stars such as Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Robert de Niro and Brad Pitt urged the hundreds of millions watching worldwide to donate money for the 200,000 people killed and two million left homeless by the January 12 disaster.

Celebs even manned phones to take donations during the live MTV show.

Clooney, 48, told viewers: "The Haitian people need our help. They need to know they are not alone, that we still care."

The night began with Alicia Keys singing her song Prelude To A Kiss in Los Angeles at 1am our time yesterday.

Justin Timberlake performed Leonard Cohen classic Hallelujah, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban and Kid Rock joined up for Lean On Me and Christina Aguilera sang Lift Me Up.

In London Beyonce performed her song Halo, accompanied on the piano by her friend, Coldplay's Chris Martin. U2's Bono, Jay Z and Rihanna also recorded contributions.

And in New York, Madonna sang Like a Prayer backed by a gospel choir, with performances by Sting and Bruce Springsteen.

The telethon ended two hours later with Haitian Wyclef Jean singing Rivers of Babylon. Beforehand he told of his own experience of the quake: "I carried bodies of my people in the cemetery. Right now we can see the second wave of the disaster coming. We have to make sure the second wave never makes it to Haiti." All tracks will be available on iTunes.

Take That, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole are among stars to record Simon Cowell's charity version of REM's Everybody Hurts, tomorrow.

HUNT FOR QUAKE SURVIVORS ENDS

The un ended the Haiti search and rescue operation yesterday -11 days after the earthquake wrecked the poverty-stricken country.

The move came as a 22-year-old tailor was pulled alive from the rubble. A UN spokeswoman said: "Except for miracles, hope is now fading." And International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander praised British rescuers as 64 firefighters landed at Gatwick. "We should be proud of the brave Britons who worked tirelessly," he said.

Haiti earthquake: Supply of aid increasing

Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti 12 days ago, more than 150,000 bodies have been recovered in the capital Port-Au-Prince alone.

The United Nations say it could take years to recover all the bodies, as many are still buried under rubble.

As for the hundreds of thousands of survivors, relief workers say they have been trying to speed up the supply of aid after criticisms that food, water and medicine are still not getting through to all who need it.

Aid officials stress that the scale of the destruction is unparalleled and say they are not going to meet the needs of Haitian people as quickly as they would like.

The BBC's Adam Mynott reports from Leogane, which was at the epicentre of the earthquake.

The Story Of Von Trapp Family

The story of the Von Trapp family was beautifully captured in a musical movie “The Sound of Music” decades ago (in 1965), and featured as a holiday edition for the Americans on ABC on Sunday at 7.00.

The movie stars Julie Andrews as Maria Von Trapp, Christopher Plummer as Capt. George Von Trapp, Richard Haydn as Max Detweiler, Eleanor Parker as Baroness Elsa Schraeder among others. The movie may be sourced from a real life story but the history is also said to be inaccurate in places. For example, the ending of the movie (which is indeed a happy one) shows the family migrate to the Swiss Alps by foo, in reality they had taken a train. These small changes however, does not change the fact that the family did go through some very hard and happy times.

Explosive PETN Used in Attack

The suspect in the attempted bombing of Northwest Flight 253 used a highly explosive substance called PETN, a law enforcement official told CBS News Saturday.

The explosives were carried in a soft plastic container - possibly a condom - though much of the packaging was destroyed in the fire, the official said.

The FBI is questioning the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who claimed to be acting on orders from al Qaeda to blow up the airliner, officials said.

A high-ranking law enforcement official told CBS News that the suspect apparently used a syringe to inject a chemical into the powder, which was located near his groin. It is a technique not seen in previous attempted attacks and it's possible that this incident was a test of whether the materials could pass screening and how effective they might be at causing damage, the source said.

Bomb suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab on UK watch-list

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, was refused a visa in May and was placed on a security list after he applied to study at a bogus college.

Meanwhile, UK passengers on US-bound flights face delays of up to three hours and extra security measures.

The Nigerian man targeted a Detroit-bound flight with explosives hidden in his clothes, it is claimed.

Police are searching several London properties linked to the Nigerian ex-University College London student.
